13th Annual Boonville Beer Fest Recap

Russ at 11:13PM

Set up, rain, beer, rain, beer, pack is the short story for Boonville ‘09. This was our 4th trip to the festival and our first in the rain and we had no idea what to expect, we soon found out! Upon arriving at the Fairgrounds Morgan, Kevin and I spent a couple of hours setting up with it sprinkling on us with a little bit of wind. Morgan almost flew away with the easy-up at one point but as soon as we were complete we made the drive to Fort Bragg to visit North Coast Brewing Company with Ethan and Mel. It was a rainy drive but the various views almost made up for it, from beautiful wineries to the redwood forest and ocean scenery it was a very diverse 45 miles. The brewery had some really good food, and of course — beer. Once we arrived back into Boonville we headed to Anderson Valley Brewing Company for our first pitcher of this years Summer Solstice, it did not disappoint! Carrie and Matt joined up with us while we were there and Matt and I left with some pretty cool growlers to take home. Aaron and his friend Zac met up with us at the campsite later on in the evening.

Saturday we all went to the Boonville General Store for breakfast and Mel and I played artists with the supplied chalk for their customers. When we got back, Val was there to greet us! It was time for us to get in line for the beer fest by then. Once in the festival everyone parted ways and we continued to come together off and on throughout. I really enjoyed this year as far as the beers went, I found myself picking and choosing which breweries and beers I wanted to try instead of aimlessly picking, it is nice to know what I am looking at. The rain on the other hand made things very cramped which was tolerable but not ideal. After the fest we walked to AVBC for a bit, had some dinner, and everyone headed to bed fairly early (unlike Friday). Sunday we packed up camp and said our goodbyes to Aaron, Zac and Val. Morgan, Ethan, Mel, Kevin, Carrie, Matt and I proceeded to AVBC to wait for a special release of a 7 year aged Port Barrel Stout special edition beer of 148 bottles, we picked up 5! For lunch we caravaned to Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa and then parted ways.

I really enjoyed having Kevin come this year along with new friends Carrie and Matt and even some new 21 year old family Aaron and his buddy, Zac. Our friends, compound, and fun is all raising exponentially. So thus, I count the days until Boonville 2010 and coordinating what will again be legen… wait for it… DARY! Berkeley Brewery Tour

Russ at 12:00PM

We took a day trip to Oakland and Berkeley to visit a few of the local breweries that we hadn’t been to, and then later in the afternoon we got to see bits of pieces of the Women’s Final 4 games. Our first and only stop in Oakland was Pacific Coast Brewing Company, the brewery is in a building built in 1876 and is located very close to the Oakland Convention Center. The look and feel of the brewery is very cool, growing up in an old bowling alley, I am partial to that old funky look. Our 2nd stop was at Star Grocery in Berkeley, a small grocery store that has a nice beer selection, although I think they need some more refrigerator space. I found myself pulling bottles from in front of others to find even more varieties. Jupiter was our 3rd stop, and my personal favorite, they had a great outdoor patio that was packed! The service was great and the beer was very flavorful. 4th stop was at Triple Rock Brewery, just a few blocks from Jupiter. Triple Rock is the oldest originally owned brewpub in America and the fifth oldest brewpub to ever open. Our last stop was at Pyramid Alehouse, we stopped here because it was close, mostly. Pyramid was recently purchased and has a lot of changes going on, most noticible yesterday was that Rollick was all over and the Amber Weizen had been discontinued, boo! We finished our day by arriving back in Roseville and stopping by BJ’s to watch the rest of the second NCAA game and then getting some yogurt at Big Spoon. View pictures from our beer tour here.

Top 10 Carnival Cruise Items To Remember

Russ at 12:01PM

Morgan and I hadn’t been on a Carnival Cruise for about 2.5 years and in that amount of time a lot can be forgotten. During our cruise this time we compiled a top 10 list of things that should not be forgotten when we or anyone else go cruising with Carnival. Here are the top 10 suggestions for our readers and musts for us (in no particular order):

  1. Pack alcohol — We did remember this again, and it is critical so that one doesn’t spend hundreds of unneeded dollars aboard the ship. We packed ours in Aquafina water bottles, about 0.25 liter per day per person is what we brought.
  2. Buy a Fountain Fun Card — You need something to mix with your alcohol, and to cut down on spending, purchase one Fountain Fun Card. The cost is $6 per day and it entitles you to unlimited soda and juice from any bar on the ship. This card pays for itself very quickly, especially when you use your one card to supply four people, shhh!
  3. Bring a flask — To avoid carrying your watter bottles everywhere with you, or having to return to your room to mix a drink save your self some walking and bring a flask with you. We forgot one this trip and I wished I had one many times a day.
  4. Eat at Nouveau Supper Club — This is a must! This is the fine dining on the ship and you have to make a reservation. The cost of this meal is $30 per person and is well worth the price. The food is excellent and there is a lot of it.
  5. Bring wine — Wine prices are highly inflated on the ship, so bring bottles of your own, as many as you like. There is a $10 corkage fee in the dining room and a $14 fee in the Supper Club. We will be bringing our own next year.
  6. Purchase Internet Package — Our first cruise we didn’t use the internet, but this year we wanted to, to update the website and check email. We opted not to buy a package because we thought we wouldn’t use that many minutes, we were wrong. The cheapest package is $55 for 100 minutes, it seems a little steep, but paying $0.75 per minute adds up to $55 quickly when you pay by the minute. So our advice is, if you’re going to use the computer at all, spend $55.
  7. Wear Sunscreen — Apply sunscreen from the first second that you are exposed to the sun, it will make for a more enjoyable vacation!
  8. Bring Less Clothes — You are on a ship, it’s likely hot, and you’ll be wearing swimming clothes 90% of the time so don’t bring so many pairs of shorts! There is also laundry facilities on the ship so you have the option of spending $2 and doing a load of dirty clothes. Then you can save room by not bringing as many shirts, pairs of underwear or socks! Attempt to get all of your clothes and shoes into one 50lb. bag.
  9. Use Luggage Express — This is a new-to-us service, for $20 per person the ship will take your bag from outside of your room on that last night and you won’t see it again until you arrive home from your flight and find it on the baggage claim. We procrastinated this year and didn’t take advantage of this option and it would have been awesome!
  10. Plan Your Excursions — My advice is to plan your excursions before you leave for your vacation. Carnival arranges excursions through vendors at each port but you pay a premium price. With a little research you can find these same vendors or excursions on the web and pay much less money. If simplicity is what you want and you don’t mind spending $20-70 more per person, book on Carnival, it’s a no brainer.

This list includes things that make your vacation more convenient, inexpensive, and/or enjoyable. As a bonus #11 on the list, if it fits in your budget, get a room with a balcony. It is beautiful and you spend more time in your room than you think.
